A Tribute to President Mattarella: Legatoria Conti Borbone for Il Giorno's 70th Anniversary

Milan, 4 June 2026

Dear Sirs
Angelo, Gabriele and Gianluca Marchesi
Legatoria Conti Borbone
Milan

On 21 April 1956, the very first issue of Il Giorno hit the newsstands. Seventy years later, to mark this anniversary, the newspaper chose to pay tribute to the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, with a special gift, entrusting its creation to the artisan craftsmanship of Legatoria Conti Borbone.

At the heart of the project is a portfolio entirely hand-bound in leather, designed to hold three items that tell the story of the newspaper: a reproduction of the printing plate used for the very first copy of Il Giorno of 21 April 1956, a reprint of that same historic issue, and the special insert "Il Giorno, 70 anni di futuro". On the cover, a gold embossing celebrates the newspaper's 70th anniversary.

Alongside the portfolio, a leather-bound volume bearing the same "Il Giorno" inscription was also delivered, dedicated to the figure of Aldo Moro — another fundamental chapter in the story told by the newspaper over the years.

Both pieces were presented to President Mattarella by Il Giorno's Editor-in-Chief, Agnese Pini, on the occasion of the visit for the newspaper's 70th anniversary. As Deputy Editor Guido Bandera wrote to us in a letter of thanks: "They were the perfect setting that enhanced our works, with which we paid tribute to the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella."

Dear Sirs,

we wish to thank you for the excellent work carried out in creating the leather plate-holder portfolio and in binding the volumes of "Il Giorno" dedicated to Aldo Moro.

They were the perfect setting that enhanced our works, with which we paid tribute to the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the visit for the 70th anniversary of "Il Giorno".

We enclose two photographs of the event, portraying Editor-in-Chief Agnese Pini and President Sergio Mattarella.

Thank you again, kind regards.

The Deputy Editor
Guido Bandera

From Milan, where we have been at work since 1873, every portfolio and every binding continues to be born from artisan work made entirely by hand, step by step: a handcrafted product, made in Italy, that this time had the honour of passing through the doors of the Quirinale. An attention to detail we dedicate to every client, within and beyond Italy's borders, for every project entrusted to us.
